OMG That is amazing. I wonder why they weren't indoors the entire time. That sun and metal got to be pretty damn HOT.

Thanks for sharing Steve. That's a kick ass job.

on a historical note, the only time that a B-17 was in the bare aluminum was right after it came off the assembly line. 95% were in camo (green, black or brown) by the time they reported to their first posting.

That plane looks fantastic! Granted, I think that anything with 4 Radial engines looks amazing, but I'm just biased

Sorry Rob, every B-17 from 1944 onward was not painted at all after the threat of German bombing raids on air bases ceased in addition to the introduction of P-47 and P-51 fighter escorts. Any B-17 after that point that was painted was a remnant of the pre-1944 period.

Oh, and that "restoration" was incredible! I would have paid for the opportunity to do that.

wow, i'm never gonna complain about waxing and polishing ANYTHING on my car ever again after seeing that... on a side note, my grandpa was an engine and prop mechanic on the B-17 in England, my dad has a whole stash of photos of those things that my grandpa took, including some nose art and a couple that made it home with very large chunks of the airplane missing. those things are tough
